DIRTY SMART MAASAI WARRIOR...

Back in March of this year i shared a story that made me fall off my office chair.
It involved Dirty Smart's 'Fiend' hoodie, Mt. Kilimanjaro, and a crazy African by the name PJay Heffi... (for full details check out http://www.dirtysmart.com/news_article.php?id=138)

After that astonishing picture, i thought ridiculousness had peaked...

Turns out it hadn't!

The above picture is of a Maasai Warrior rockin' Dirty Smart's 'Sleep When You're Dead' tee!

Whenever i spot a superstar DJ rockin' Dirty Smart i'll always share a bit of info for people who haven't heard of them...

So... who are the Maasai?

The Maasai people of East Africa live in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania along the Great Rift Valley on semi-arid and arid lands.
Killing a lion in Masaai culture is a test of manhood. They do not eat the lion, just keep the tail.
The Maasai drink blood on special occasions.

Whoever you are Mr. Maasai. BIG love x

AVICII GETS HIS NAME ON LEONA'S SLEEVE...

Leona Lewis, Avicii, Collide
Just a couple of weeks after Swede Avicii took UK pop-warbler Leona Lewis to court for copyright infringement, the former foes are now sharing co-author credits like old buddies.

After some legal wrangling between Lewis’s record label Syco and Ministry Of Sound in Avicii’s corner, an agreement was met and the (formerly) offending single Collide is forging on to an early September release.

Interestingly, the official video and single cover sleeve revealed over the weekend see Leona Lewis and Avicii both given top billing (see above)

TIESTO SET TO BREAK U.S CROWD RECORD...

After a couple of decades in the game, it’s pretty remarkable to see there’s still room for Tiësto to go bigger. The irrepressible Dutchman has set his sights on conquering North America in recent times, setting up shop in Las Vegas, headlining monster festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival and Electric Zoo and now, in a move that can only be described as savvy, touring US colleges. What better way to win the hearts of America’s impressionable and frequently intoxicated youth?

Even by his bombastic standards, the final stop of the college tour is going to be a large one. In fact, according to Billboard, Tiësto’s show at the 26,000-capacity Home Depot Stadium in L.A. on 8 October will be the largest single-headliner DJ show in U.S. history. “L.A. has always been such a welcoming city to me and it’s been a while since I’ve played there,” says the DJ, “so to be able to finish off the college tour with such a great show is really special.”

We know dance music is big business in the L.A. right now, but 26,000 is a lot of tickets. That said, he’ll probably pull it off, then do it again in 2012. The kids want trouse.

DONT TRAMPLE THE ELECTRIC DAISY...

Dont trample the electric daisy
As we all know, dance music is big business in North America at the moment, but not everyone is happy about it. With the boom of electronic festivals in Los Angeles and beyond has come protest from some corners about the ‘dangers of rave’. Much of the attention has been centred on Electric Daisy Carnival, the immense flagship event from LA promoters Insomniac, following the death of a festivalgoer in 2010.

This week in the Los Angeles Times, Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella has returned fire with an editorial titled ‘Don’t Trample The Electric Daisy’, which you can read in full below....
...
..
.

The media and some public officials have had plenty of bad things to say about the Electric Daisy Carnival, and a lot of it can be summed up by the word "rave." But this isn't 1993, and Insomniac, which produces EDC, isn't throwing parties in warehouses with no rules and no security.

Insomniac creates multimillion-dollar productions with top artists like Tiesto (who performed at the opening of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens) and Will.i.am (who performed for President Obama). Don't know them? Your kids certainly do. Both have also performed at Electric Daisy Carnival, an event that until last year had been held in Los Angeles for 15 years without major incident.

A snowball of negative press and political fallout followed the tragic death of a teenager after the Electric Daisy Carnival in June 2010. Attention focused on such an alarming incident is understandable, but ever since then Insomniac has been unfairly placed under a microscope. The same scrutiny has not been applied to individuals engaging in illegal behavior or to other festivals and mass gatherings that endure similar issues.

In late July, a documentary, "Electric Daisy Carnival Experience," capturing the largest electronic music festival in the world, premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Unfortunately, a small group of people disrupted the event when a popular artist sent out a tweet offering a free concert before the premiere. Although the film showcased an Insomniac production, Insomniac had nothing to do with the tweet or what followed, yet much of the media incorrectly labeled the situation with the words "Electric Daisy Carnival Riot."

And though that kind of characterization now comes easily to the media, many of the same outlets have managed to make just a small footnote of any good news related to Electric Daisy.

Insomniac commissioned Beacon Economics to study the economic impact of the Electric Daisy Carnival, finding that the two-day event in 2010 boosted Los Angeles County economic output by $42 million, bringing in $14.6 million in income for workers in the region and $3.1 million in tax revenue — local governments earned more than $1.2 million in revenue, and $1.9 million went into the state budget.

This isn't to say that the economic benefits outweigh security concerns. They certainly don't.

Our events are successful only if they are safe for attendees. Insomniac has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars during just the last year in additional security personnel; it has purchased state-of-the-art ID scanners to guarantee that our events are limited to adults; and we continue to enforce a zero-tolerance policy for illegal substance possession and use. Additionally, by releasing medical and law enforcement statistics after our events, Insomniac has become more transparent than any other major U.S. festival producer.

We continue to learn from the past; however, there are only so many factors we can control. At some point individuals are responsible for their own behavior. We can't prevent every instance of self-destructive behavior, or tweets that others send out without our knowledge. Any time there is a mass gathering of people, event organizers are going to face challenges. There is no such thing as a "perfect" event.

If the issue is public safety, where is the avalanche of bad press in reaction to the L.A. Rising festival, headlined by Rage Against the Machine at the Coliseum in July, when among 50,000 attendees there were 15 medical transports to area hospitals? That same weekend at an Insomniac event in San Bernardino attended by 20,000 people, there were two medical transports, and one of those was for knee pain.

There are plenty of other examples. Where was the outrage in early August over the Manhattan Beach six-man beach volleyball tournament, where there were 35 alcohol-related arrests? Where were the editorials in June 2010 calling for an end to Lakers championship games in downtown Los Angeles after fans actually rioted, causing damage to businesses, setting cars on fire and assaulting innocent people?

If the issue is drug use, I'm certain that those criticizing us haven't been to either the Hollywood Bowl or UCLA's reggae festival, because with the thick haze of marijuana smoke laying over the crowd, those events should be on the outs too.

The strenuous objections to our events should sound familiar to anyone who remembers early reactions to rock 'n' roll or hip-hop music. But to suggest, as this newspaper and Coliseum officials have done, that an event such as the Electric Daisy Carnival has no place in Los Angeles is like saying rock concerts should have been banned in California after violence erupted at the Rolling Stones concert in Altamont in 1969....

SO YEAH... ARMIN IS REALLY GOING INTO SPACE...

Armin Van Buuren, space astronaut
For those of you who thought it was some kind of late April Fool’s joke, it looks like trance king Armin van Buuren really is turning astronaut.

This weekend at the Summer Fair in Dutch town Noordwijk, the DJ revealed the Lynx spacecraft he’ll be boarding in 2014. Meanwhile, Tiesto is gearing up for his tour of US colleges, pretending not to be jealous.

“The SP-1 is an incredible, impressive thing,” Armin enthused in a statement this week. “Just thinking about floating around in one of those, hovering about 100 km above the Earth, gives me goosebumps. Even if I have to wait another three years. I think it is great that SXC and the Summer Fair chose to introduce the spacecraft to the world for the first time, in the Netherlands. I am feeling extremely proud I am the one to reveal it to the world.”

PETE TONG'S STALKER ISSUE CONTINUES...

Pete Tong, Shara Nelson
Radio 1 veteran DJ Pete Tong has been granted a restraining order against Massive Attack’s best-known singer Shara Nelson, after a court heard she harassed him repeatedly with nuisance calls claiming to be both his manager and wife.

The hugely talented British singer performed on Massive Attack’s two greatest hits Unfinished Sympathy and Safe from Harm in the early 90s and was notable for being both humble, friendly, and unusually quiet and shy.

Appearing in a West London court this week, however, she appeared to be still disturbed, giving her surname to the court as 'Tong'. The Sun reported she’s been ordered to refrain from contacting the multi-millionaire radio star indefinitely and ordered to do 80 hours’ community service. (The Sun: http://bit.ly/nhsLiT)

A witness outside the court said: "Shara looked a shadow of her former self. You would never believe this was once a successful singer."

A spokesman for Tong (Pete) declined to comment.

BAD WEATHER CHASES ID FESTIVAL AROUND AMERICA...

Identity Festival weather

Hitting 20 US cities across the month of August, the Identity Festival is riding high on North America’s current fervour for all things electronic. The touring carnival features a few key headliners – Kaskade, Steve Aoki, Pretty Lights, Rusko and Avicii – alongside a rotating cast of fellow dance music types.

Like an EDM version of the Vans Warped tour, the whole entourage travels together from city to city in a fleet of buses, leaving a kandi-coloured trail in its wake.

The ID Fest road-trip began in Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago, and it’s already up to show ten. One factor the festival hasn’t been able to out-run, though, is "epic weather fail", in the words of DJ Shadow on his Facebook. At Sunday night’s stop in New York, a heavy rainstorm forced Aoki to wind up his set on the Dim Mak stage after just one track. Cue wet and unhappy Aoki-acolytes.

Following that upset, the Miami date has been postponed, with fears that the impending Hurricane Irene could wreak havoc on the festival site. Given the current crop of disasters at festivals around the world, we’re guessing the Identity organisers are taking no chances.

For the cities that have been able to enjoy the full show, it’s been a smorgasbord of wubbs and anthemic electro-house, with the occasional curveball like Modeselektor or Holy Ghost. Top billing has gone to Kaskade, who’s now sporting a raised DJ set-up flanked by pulsing video screens.

The picture above was taken during Steve Aoki's set in Jones Beach, New York.
#EPIC lightning shot!

MINISTRY OF SOUND, "SAVE OUR CLUB!"...

Ministry Of Sound, Save Our Club
The future of the Ministry of Sound club has been put in doubt following a planning application by property developer Oakmayne. The company has submitted plans for a residential building on the site of the old Eileen House, which, if built, would sit opposite the Ministry of Sound building and could pose a significant threat to the club's entertainment license. Oakmayne's attitude towards preserving the longevity of the club is perhaps best summed up by a comment from its chairman, Christopher Allen, who when questioned said;

"nightclubs come and go (meh)".
(fyi he didnt actually say "meh" but i bet he was thinking it...)

We, disagree with you Christopher. And we refuse to just sit idly by and let this happen.

Ministry of Sound Group CEO Lohan Presencer "Ministry of Sound is not just a nightclub. Millions of people have passed through the doors over the 18 years we have been open. 300,000 people visit us annually, bringing trade to Elephant & Castle and the surrounding area. We have always strived to create the moments that people live for, and we will continue to do so. We are the people that come here, the people that work here, the music that is played here and the lifelong bonds that are made here. If we lose Ministry of Sound, we are losing a vital piece of youth culture in this country. Nightclubs may have existed before Ministry of Sound, but they were never the same afterwards."

Please sign MoS's petition *HERE* if you oppose Oakmayne’s planning application.

FEDDE LE GRAND GOES GREEN...

Fedde Le Grand, Green
“I was shocked at the size of my carbon footprint. When we crunched the numbers and worked out how many miles I’d flown and the amount of fuel the jet had used, it works out at 325 trees to offset it, which is practically a small forest!!”

So said Fedde le Grand after calculating the environmental cost of what has been a truly jet-set couple of months. But the flying Dutchman will be doing his bit for the environment by planting over 300 trees to offset his considerable carbon footprint.

The huge demand for Fedde’s presence at clubs and festivals across Europe this summer has seen him incorporate a private jet into proceedings to ensure he made his vast commitments on time. But the constant criss-crossing across the continent comes at a cost to the delicate balance of our environment – and it’s a cost that Fedde is mindful of.

“Using a jet is a luxury for anyone, and that of course includes myself but with my massive summer tour diary it was something that I really had to do to keep on top of things.” Fedde said.

“There’s no excuse for not compensating for the amount of travel I’ve done, it’s simply a case of everyone doing their own bit to help the overall situation and by planting these trees I’m helping to do my part to protect the planet – always a good thing!”

If you feel inspired by Fedde’s green commitments then you can follow suit by offsetting your own travel costs HERE
