BOYS NOIZE WORKING WITH SNOOP DOGG...

Boys Noize knows how to keep himself occupied. In between all his label duties and non-stop touring, he’s found time to help out a couple of acts First up was the Scissor Sisters, with frontman Jake Shears gushing that Alex Ridha has been something of a “hard techno” mentor. Next up on Ridha’s radar: none other than hip hop heavy Snoop Dogg.

If you’re not following Snoop’s Twitter, you might’ve missed the surprising announcement: “its official.. workn with @boysnoize on some game changing ishh. U HEAR ME!!” Apart from that, there isn’t much to go on, but we do know that Boys Noize is capable of magic – perhaps more magic than Ian Carey or David Guetta could summon in their Snoop collabs, anyway...

Carl Cox on Guetta's collab; "it’s the epitome of what’s bad about dance music collaboration"... (source: http://www.dirtysmart.com/news_article.php?id=540)

CLUB DRUG CLINIC OPENS IN LONDON...

NHS party drug clinic
Reported by 'The Guardian', the first NHS clinic dedicated to 'club drug' addicts has opened in London. The Club Drug Clinic in Chelsea and Westminster hospital is the work of addiction psychiatrist Dr Owen Bowden-Jones, who said the need for a treatment centre became apparent when 70 people asked to be treated during the clinic’s trial period.

While existing clinics are targeted towards those addicted to the likes of alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine, drugs such as ketamine, ecstasy and 'legal highs' will be within the domain of the Club Drug Clinic. "If someone is using a substance and not having any problems with it, our clinic is not the place for them," Bowden-Jones says in The Guardian’s report. "We are not making any judgment about people's drug use. The resource is for people who run into trouble."

The article also notes that in 2010 41 new substances were produced and a further 20 appeared in the first four months of this year, with new concoctions turning up faster than they can be banned.

According to Bowden-Jones, some of those treated in the clinic’s trial period included a 19-year-old student who developed a "binging pattern on mephedrone" and a 31-year-old woman spending £600 a month on ketamine, crippling her bladder in the process.

"The health risks associated with excessive use of club drugs are underestimated by many people," Bowden-Jones added, "and little is known about the potential problems of the newer drugs."

Sounds like a good idea, although i was under the impression drugs cured cancer...

MAD DECENT VOLUME 1...

Mad Decent Volume 1
Mad Decent is proud to announce its very own "Mad Decent Volume 1" compilation, featuring 18 tracks hand selected by label head Diplo from his favorite overlooked remixes of past releases plus a variety of new music from the label's next crop of artists.

The compilation presents a selection of Mad Decent artist who've helped shape the label's unique personality since its inception. Featuring blistering remixes of classics such as Bosco Delrey's "Wild One" (Reset! Remix) and Maluca's "El Tigeraso" (Sticky K Remix) to unreleased gems like Boy 8-bit "House on the Hill" and Dillon Francis's "Beautician 2.0", to in your face bangers like Rusko's "Everyday" (Netsky Remix). Mad Decent Vol. 1 is as much a showcase of the label's biggest names and tracks as it is an illustration of its incessant efforts to bring new genres and cultures to light.

The label has come a long way from the underground Philly scene where it all started, collecting a diversified group of artists along the way. From Blaqstarr, to Rusko, to Savage Skulls and PO PO, the sound and influences come from all over the world, and somehow work together to form a unified front of weirdos that make music outside the lines.

"We've seen artists explode, interns come and go, bills forgetting to get paid, mix tapes getting us sued, and block parties going nationwide. Through it all, we've made a really amazing catalog of music, which is what this comp is all about."

230911.com spells out MSG...

Swedish House Mafia, 23.09.11
Rumblings of an epic announcement have been suspected since the group first posted a website, www.230911.com, teasing coded numbers and letters that eventually came to spell out MSG...

Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello are slated to take the stage at New York's famed Madison Square Garden in December.

In just a year and a half, the holy trinity of house will have gone from headlining Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival to hosting their very own 15,000-strong South Beach party. And now comes the Garden.

Should it be a surprise that a dance music outfit will follow in the footsteps of U2, Britney Spears, Paul McCartney, Jay-Z and the Kings of Leon? Maybe not to those in the know. But in a two-year period, it's fair to say one of music's most-underground genres has gone pop. Afrojack, David Guetta, RedOne and Dr. Luke have turned the radio "club," and EDM festival attendance has skyrocketed. Dance music has never been more popular — and according to some their biggest stars, if anyone can handle the Garden, it's "the Swedes."

"The Swedish House Mafia crew: If there is one thing you can note them for, it's thinking outside the box," Pete Tong said. "It's exciting. It's something for the people to talk about that moves the culture forward."

When MTV News caught up with Tiësto in Miami this year, he said, "They inspire me. Sebastian is like the Mozart of Sweden. Steve is brilliant. He makes great underground tracks, and he has the right soul. Axwell is the pretty boy," he said, laughing. "Brown hair, blue eyes, who delivers great music. They are all three amazingly talented."

Chuckie called SHM "biggest thing at the moment." "They do the craziest club tracks, the biggest mainstream records. I really like those guys and really respect them. Swedish House Mafia, to me, is the biggest thing out there, for real."

Tickets for "One Night Stand," December 16 at Madison Square Garden, go on sale September 30 at 10 a.m. ET. For information about pre-sales and how to get tickets, head over to Swedish House Mafia's website and Facebook page. And keep your eyes and ears peeled: Expect a live album, One Night Stand, recorded on the road this year, which will feature their latest single, "Antidote" (a collaboration with Knife Party: Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen from Pendulum), and the official release of their remix of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall."

THE SQUATTERS TALK TUNES, IBIZA & FUTURE PLANS...

The Squatters, Ibiza 2011
In preparation for the Judgement Sunday closing party taking place on the 25th September at Eden Ibiza, The Squatters are getting ready for their final DJ battle.

The boys are currently rounding off a few special bits in the studio that have been prepared especially for this final Judgement event: ‘We can't wait to get back on the island for the final battle! Alex is hitting the sun beds as he doesn't tan very well, he usually looks like a lobster. Oli on the other hand is half Italian so he goes golden brown instantly!’

This is certainly not their first time playing at the Judgement Sunday events. All summer they’ve been sending crowds crazy with their tracks. ‘A track we always play that gets the crowd going at every gig we play has to be our remix of the oldskool track "Up To No Good" by the Porn Kings. We never released this so it still remains a weapon of choice in our DJ sets.’

They’ve been playing a few of their brand new tracks "Sucka Punch", which was released last month and their forthcoming release "Zippyshare" which is released on 10th October: ‘These have been doing some serious damage on the dance floor. After all we did create them especially for this crowd.'

They describe Judgement Sundays as different to any other event that takes place on the island. ‘We have been going there as fans for many years and now it's great to be behind the scenes of it all. Everybody in there feels like part of the event from the clubbers to the organisers. It's like one big Judgement family. '

They added: ‘We have had a lot of international fans come to see us and it's great to be able to get up close with them. With Ibiza being the central hub for clubbing it's not just a British crowd and it's great to see everyone enjoying themselves together.’

Year in, year out The Squatters end up in Ibiza, even if it’s just for a couple of days in between gigs: ‘We love the place! It’s starting to feel like a second home. There's something magical about the island! And where else in the world is totally devoted to partying on this scale?’

The boys favourite places include a little Tapas bar in Ibiza Town, at the bottom of the castle entrance, which they say does the most amazing food and wine. They also enjoy spending time at Golden Buddha: ‘Chilling out with a few mohitos, watching the sunset. We don't often get chance to hit the beaches but when we do Cala Banirras is a beautiful place to chillax.’

The Squatters cannot believe summer is almost over: ‘We’ve had so much fun out in Ibiza this year, especially playing for Judgement Sundays. We’ve made lots of new friends on the island and will be venturing to see them through the winter months. We’ll be sad to leave here.’

The fun does not end there though, as The Squatters have plans of getting back in to the studio, lots of photo shoots and performances around the world. ‘We are running events back in the UK as well and we want to make them extra special through the winter to keep the excitement going for our fans until the summer is back.’

With many plans in the pipeline, the future is looking far from bleak: ‘Our record label is going really well (What's Your Status?) and we have even bigger plans for it for 2012. We are also looking forward to playing in the USA next year and a whole other bunch of international gigs.'

'We are working on collaborations with other artists in the studio and we will continue to listen and talk to our fans, as they are the people we do this for.’ Watch this space...

DEADMAU5, "GOT MY ASS KICKED BY A BUNCH OF FUCKING PLANTS"...

deadmau5, wall of fame
There will be no Joel Zimmerman going on the Niagara Falls Arts & Culture Wall of Fame this year, and city councillor Janice Wing wants to know why.

In a tersely-worded e-mail to council, Wing says she was "outraged" to learn the multi-Juno Winner, known to millions of fans as deadmau5, could be overlooked for the Wall of Fame not once, but twice.

Zimmerman's grandfather Don Johnson submitted his name for consideration this year, as did Zimmerman's mother Nancy previously. Both times, Zimmerman was bypassed, despite massive worldwide success.

Wing is questioning whether the process to get on the Wall of Fame is "fair and unbiased," and wants to know how the Arts & Culture Committee came to their decision.

"It's a sham," she says. "There's a problem with the process."

"He and James Cameron are arguably the two most famous artists to ever come out of Niagara Falls … I just don't see how they can bypass him."

Zimmerman, 30, has had another huge year, solidifying his place as one of the world's top electro/progressive artists. The former Westlane student won his fourth straight Juno award for Dance Recording of the Year, and on Nov. 5 he'll headline the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Wing wants to know – what more does Deadmau5 have to do?

"If this isn't bias, I don't know what it is," she says. "Other than sheer ignorance, perhaps."

Niagara Falls producer/artist Brad Pine also thinks something is amiss. He credits Zimmerman as a huge influence, and can't believe his home town still hasn't formally recognized him. In light of the Wall of Fame snub, he's pushing city council to declare a Deadmau5 Day in Niagara Falls.

"I was personally going to nominate Joel (for the Wall of Fame) this year myself," he says. "I didn't bother because I felt he was gonna get the nod so easily. When I think of Niagara Falls, I think of James Cameron and Joel Zimmerman/Deadmau5."

"I definitely suspect there is some type of bias going on," he adds. "If the A&C Committee doesn't know how huge Deadmau5 is, then they are far more dead in the head than any deceased mouse I've ever come across."

Arts and Culture Committee chairwoman Karen Fraser is taken aback by the criticism, and is dismayed Wing took her complaints public instead of phoning her. It's not policy for the committee to discuss who (and who doesn't) get inducted before city council approves the list.

She resents accusations of "bias" against either Zimmerman or his mother, a former Arts and Culture Committee member.

"Absolutely not," she says. "We don't play that game."

This year's inductees are Diana Coatsworth, Honeymoon Suite, Bob McAdorey, Brian Smylski, Frank Shuster and the landscape architecture of Oakes Garden Theatre.

Fraser says the nominating committee uses a confidential "point system" when evaluating submissions. Categories include outstanding achievement, how long they resided in Niagara Falls, and impact on the community.

Zimmerman started his career in Niagara Falls but currently lives in Toronto.

This isn't the first time a name has been conspicuous by its absence on the Wall of Fame. It wasn't until last year that director James Cameron was inducted, though Fraser insists the delay was because no one had put his name forth until then. Once approved, the nominee or their surviving family must give permission to be inducted, which wasn't easy for a director as busy as Cameron.

Fraser laughs off suggestions the eight-member Arts and Culture Committee simply doesn't know who deadmau5 is.

"We all know who he is," she says. "The committee itself is varied in its make-up – different kinds of artists, different age groups, different worlds are all at the table. No, he's very well-known and we're all very aware of him.”

(source: The Forterie Times)

Joel comments: "This year's inductees are .... the landscape architecture of Oakes Garden Theatre. the landscape architecture of Oakes Garden Theatre????? damn... got my ass kicked by a bunch of fucking plants? dude, this is killin me over here.

OASIS GET A FIGURE RE-FIX..

DJ Figure
You may think 'Oasis' amalgamated with drumstep would sound silly...
You would be wrong!
Proven by the small-town producer Josh Gard a.k.a FIGURE!...
..
.
"
This has been a private edit reserved for my live sets for the last few months. Some of you at my past shows have asked for it, so releasing it as a free download for all. Not so much a remix as the song is amazing in its original form, but a drumstep edit to give it legs to crush on the dance floor. Not sure what the band is fighting about these days, but look em up and give them a nod. Whatever they’re doing... their music is still as relevant today as it was when they actually got along...

NORMAN DORAY TALKS 'STRICTLY IBIZA TO AMSTERDAM' & PARTYING LIKE A FRENCHMAN...

Norman Doray
Norman Doray plays with the big boys. Coming straight from Ibiza where he hit up the Swedish House Mafia's Masquerade Motel, Mr. Doray is dropping into Arkadia at the Fontainebleau this Thursday for the weekly Subliminal Sessions party.

Co-producer of "Chase The Sun", last summer's epic track that's been ripped in virtually every big-room DJ set ever since, Doray has just released another Beatport charter last week. And October brings a first for Norman with the drop of his debut two-disc compilation Strictly Ibiza to Amsterdam that offers some disco, funk, and club hits.

You're coming to Miami straight from Ibiza, and we'd love to believe we have some things in common with that famed city. Do we?

Norman Doray: Yeah, you're right. You have some similarities: sun, girls, money, and clubs. But it's two completely different cultures. Ibiza is way more European with wild landscapes and a bit of farniente [Note: Crossfade had to look this word up. French to English dictionary says "lazing about."] and Miami is all about America.

How did you go about splitting your latest compilation, Strictly Ibiza to Amsterdam, into "Day" and "Night" CDs?

Norman Doray: I wanted to do two different CDs to show the people two sides of me. One side, "Day," is more based on funk groove and disco vibes, which are my roots. The other CD, "Night," is more of what I play all around the world in clubs -- more big room and progressive sounds. I love both of them!

The compilation features some of the biggest names in house, like Erick Morillo, as well as a lot of upcoming artists, like Sebjack. How did you decide which songs and artists to feature?

Norman Doray: To be honest, it's not about the names here in the compilation. It was more about the tracks. If the tracks are good and I feel them, I wanted to put them in the compilation. And it's even better if we have young artists like Sebjack or Sebastien Drums alongside legends like Erick Morillo or Todd Terry.

It seems to me like disco house has been making a comeback. What's your take on it?

Norman Doray: I think you are right, but in a different way. Clearing a sample is way harder nowadays. So it's more about cutting the disco sound and mixing it with more progressive and clubby elements. I really like it!

You've had some awesome collaborations in your career, like a recent one with David Tort. Are these productions done by sending tracks back and forth online? Or do you ever get together with your colleagues to produce?

Norman Doray: No, I never do tracks via the Internet. I really prefer to be in the studio with my friend and exchange the ideas straight. I think that is way better for the track and the atmosphere in it.

What was the idea or inspiration behind your latest release, "Kalifornia"? Why is it spelled with a K?

Norman Doray: The inspiration was to do like a tribute to my roots and where I come from, France. With all the French touch heritage we have in Cali, I wanted to call this track "Kalifornia" because I love this place. It may be one of the best in the world. I thought it was funnier to spell it with a K than with a C.

What was the music scene like growing up in France?

Norman Doray: It was so good: Daft Punk, Cassius, Phoenix, and more. It was a new thing and everyone was excited about it. Clubs were packed and there was a big energy. It's a bit different now.

When you're not touring or making music, what else do you spend your time on? Do you have any interests people might not know about?

Norman Doray: Yeah, I love spending time with my girl, friends, and family. I also love sports and eating great food. Everything is simple but so good.

R.I.P DJ MEHDI...

DJ Mehdi
Tributes are pouring in for French producer and Ed Banger mainstay DJ Mehdi who passed away yesterday (September 13th).

Coming of age in the French hip hop scene, DJ Mehdi became a central part of the Ed Banger collective. Releasing his debut album 'Lucky Boy' through the label, the producer found his sound by injecting a hip hop attitude into electro house.

Completing numerous collaborations, DJ Mehdi was highly thought of throughout the world of electronic music. News of his death broke yesterday (September 13th) after Parisian nightspot the Social Club released a statement.

Friends and collaborators paid their respects, while Ed Banger released a very simple statement to mourn their colleague:
"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our friend DJ Mehdi. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."

Amongst the first to pay their respects were Canadian duo Chromeo, who said: “We lost our brother. No words.”

The tragic incident has moved far beyond the world of French electro, indicating the near universal respect afford to DJ Mehdi.

Annie Mac tweeted "I'm speechless for the loss of DJ Mehdi. Sending all my love to his beautiful family and to Pedro Winter and Ed Banger Records in Paris. X"

DJ Mehdi was married to the French graffiti artist Fafi. Award winning producer Paul Epworth added: “V sad to hear about DJ Mehdi. What a shit day.”

The Bloody Beetroots tweeted: "R.I.P. Dj MEHDI. The void he has left behind is unbearable. Love you, Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo."

Steve Aoki tweeted: "Rest in peace to my brother forever here and in the after life djmehdi. i love u and miss u."

Dubstep pioneer Skream recently shared a bill with DJ Mehdi, “RIP Dj Medhi…Cant believe I was with you Saturday.“

DJ Mehdi recently played a set in London's KOKO venue, while also appearing at Bestival with Riton under the Carte Blanche guise. It is reported that Mehdi suffered fatal injuries after the roof of his Paris home gave way, (France Soir newspaper).

RIP DJ Mehdi. An innovator of sound. So sad..

SKRILLEX & FRIENDS TO APPEAR ON KORN'S 'DUBSTEP' ALBUM...

Skrillex, Korn, The Path To Totality
File this one under 'headlines you wouldn't have seen two years ago'.
On 12 November 2011, nu-metal survivors Korn will release album number ten, 'The Path To Totality', which normally wouldn’t raise a blip on Dirty Smart's radar. Things are different this time, though, thanks to the involvement of bass fiends Kill The Noise, Excision, 12th Planet and Skrillex, who readied us for all this back in April. That's right, concerned citizens of the world: Korn has made a "dubstep album".

With fittingly Korn-y titles like 'Chaos Lives In Everything', 'Narcissistic Cannibal' and 'Burn The Obedient', 'The Path To Totality' is certainly a curious prospect. "Normally it would drive me crazy because I think drum machines are soulless," Korn's drummer Ray Lazier told Download magazine. "But (singer Jonathan Davis) said, 'No, we're going to experiment with triggers,' which I've never done before. So we actually triggered the sounds Skrillex made with my kit – I'm actually playing them live."

As we hardly need to tell you, the reaction from Korn acolytes has been decidedly mixed. Sample message board appraisal: "Dubstep is the dumbest fucking thing ever created." However you cut it, it's certainly notable that the likes of 12th Planet and Excision are throwing their weight behind such a divisive band. Have a listen to the Skrillex collab 'Get Up' to assess whether you’re intrigued or queasy at the prospect of an album’s worth of this.
