SKRILLEX SCORES 5 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS...

Skrillex, Grammy nominations
Despite the chorus of disbelievers, there's no doubt 2011 has been good to Skrillex. Now the superstar has bagged himself 5 Grammy nominations including 'Best New Artist'.

Skrillex is up against Bon Iver, Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry and J. Cole – a mixed bunch if ever there was one. Usually dance music is neatly confined to the Best Dance Recording category, so this is a significant moment if you count these kinds of moments as significant.

Skrillex does also appear in the Best Dance Recordings nominees, alongside friend deadmau5. Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend is in there breaking up the boys’ club as well.

SKRILLEX, "HATERS GONNA HATE"...

Skrillex, Haters gonna hate
It's probably fair to say that for every devout fan Skrillex has, there's someone else out there just not feeling his harsh beats. So how does that make the dub-step producer feel? Well, his view is pretty much this:

haters gonna hate.

When asked about an 'I Hate Skrillex' page on Facebook in an interview with Mixmag, Skrillex responded "No one in the scene has a problem with me, I come to London and hang out with guys like Skream and Benga. It's just bullshit."

Skrillex also hit out at his critics by referring to them as "crickets", quipping "You can hear them – but when you walk by they shut the fuck up". Meow!

Still, it appears Skrillex is coming out ahead of the haters. While his official page (http://www.facebook.com/skrillex) has just shy of 2.5 million fans on Facebook, the 'I Hate Skrillex' page only has 378...

SKRILLEX & FRIENDS TO APPEAR ON KORN'S 'DUBSTEP' ALBUM...

Skrillex, Korn, The Path To Totality
File this one under 'headlines you wouldn't have seen two years ago'.
On 12 November 2011, nu-metal survivors Korn will release album number ten, 'The Path To Totality', which normally wouldn’t raise a blip on Dirty Smart's radar. Things are different this time, though, thanks to the involvement of bass fiends Kill The Noise, Excision, 12th Planet and Skrillex, who readied us for all this back in April. That's right, concerned citizens of the world: Korn has made a "dubstep album".

With fittingly Korn-y titles like 'Chaos Lives In Everything', 'Narcissistic Cannibal' and 'Burn The Obedient', 'The Path To Totality' is certainly a curious prospect. "Normally it would drive me crazy because I think drum machines are soulless," Korn's drummer Ray Lazier told Download magazine. "But (singer Jonathan Davis) said, 'No, we're going to experiment with triggers,' which I've never done before. So we actually triggered the sounds Skrillex made with my kit – I'm actually playing them live."

As we hardly need to tell you, the reaction from Korn acolytes has been decidedly mixed. Sample message board appraisal: "Dubstep is the dumbest fucking thing ever created." However you cut it, it's certainly notable that the likes of 12th Planet and Excision are throwing their weight behind such a divisive band. Have a listen to the Skrillex collab 'Get Up' to assess whether you’re intrigued or queasy at the prospect of an album’s worth of this.

Following its huge success, Skrillex is now back in the studio putting together his next album which is due for release towards the end of the year.

PLEASE. DANCE. SAFE...

Electric Daisy Carnival
On Sunday i was browsing twitter, reading the aftermath of EDC.
At least 1 death and 30 people hospitalised for drug, alcohol and heat-related illnesses...

Skrillex hit the nail on the head for me... "I'm not one to force my ideals onto other people but I just wanted to say one thing: Please take care of yourselves and STOP getting completely fucked out of your mind on all of these drugs. Be responsible, have an amazing time but don't kill yourself in the process. I really do care about people and it makes me upset to see this sort of thing happening."

E is supposed to be a fun drug, you just stay hydrated, don’t take too much and keep up the good vibes.

Here’s some rules:

drink water...
The recommended amount of water to drink is bottle for every hour of dancing. Remember: sip, don’t gulp. Do not drink too much water.

avoid alcohol...
It increases body temperature, makes the kidneys work much harder and gives a much worse come-down. Almost all Ecstasy-related deaths have involved alcohol.

take breaks...
rising body temperature is the most dangerous physical aspect of Ecstasy use. Take regular breaks from dancing to cool down. If possible, go outside.

watch the dose...
never take more than two pills, less if you are female and / or you have a small build. Never take two at the same time. The more MDMA you take, the more likely you are to suffer from overheating, neurotoxic effects and memory impairment.

don’t mix pills...
Avoid mixing pills in the same session to reduce the chance of impurity interactions, or being flattened by two pills with radically different strengths

drink fruit juices...
They are more efficient in replacing lost nutrients. Avoid fizzy drinks as they can cause nausea.

take Vitamin C...
It’s an antioxidant and will prevent MDMA neurotoxicity.

avoid ‘diet’ drinks...
In fact, any drink containing artificial sweeteners (such as aspartame). They contain phenylaline, a substance which increases the neurotoxicity of MDMA.

get pills tested using a testing kit...
Many users lick pills before buying them in an attempt to identify the taste, but speed and MDMA have almost identical tastes. You can find out about testing kits here.

keep groups of friends together...
This should be done especially among inexperienced users. Also, be prepared to talk people through bad times.

leave time between regular Ecstasy use...
At least a one-month gap between Ecstasy use is advisable, although a two- or three-month break is much more preferable. This will help keep your tolerance levels down and products like Onnit Rollin can help your body recover.

Please. Dance. Safe.

Love Mr DS x

HOLY SHIP!..

Hard Presents, Holy Ship!
We’re currently feeling damn envious reading the announcement of the awesomely named Holy Ship! festival that’s going down in the US in the new year.

Brought to American clubbers by electro dance brand Hard, the Holy Ship! festival will take a slew of big name DJs to the high seas and to the Bahamas for a weekend rave cruise. Departing from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on January 6th, 2012, the Holy Ship! cruise will take punters out onto the ocean where they can get loose with acts like A-Trak, Laidback Luke, Skrillex and Rusko before disembarking on a mother-effing private island for a beachside festival headlined by Fatboy Slim. Americans really don’t do anything by half.

Sure this news comes pretty far in advance but you could certainly do worse than join this tropical rave cruise if you’re in America if only to giggle at the sight of Skrillex in a beach attire. And the news also gives us some clues as to who we probably won’t see on any New Years tours over our summer. Cross off the below names from your Summadayze wishlist.

Hard presents, Holy Ship! 2012:

Fatboy Slim
Laidback Luke
Skrillex
Steve Aoki
Diplo
Rusko
A-Trak
Brodinski
Buraka Som Sistema
Doorly
Tommy Lee & DJ Aero
Destructo
Dillon Francis
Mike Deuce
Contra
Jaxon Bentley

SKRILLEX CHATS HATERS...

Few artists have polarised opinion of late like LA’s Skrillex. Gatecrashing and dominating the Beatport Top 10 with his Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites EP, his dirty, distorted take on cut-up electro and guttural dubstep has found him equal numbers of fans and haters it seems.

Speaking to inthemix while on his European tour, he confronted the haters side of things, saying it doesn’t really bother him too much. “I always get asked what’s up with all my haters but the thing is I’ve barely ever experienced it,” he said. “I just don’t go looking for them and I don’t read them. I know that Dubstep Forum has whole threads dedicated to me, which is very flattering, but they don’t like anything that isn’t a square wave of filter and an 808 kick, y’know? And there was this thing on the Erol Alkan Forum where they said that I had all these ghost-producers, so I had to step in and post that time.”

He puts the hate factor down to a backlash against a success rather than on personal taste or dislike however. “I see it happen on forums all the time, like on Dubstep Forum they fucking hate Rusko, Doctor P – all the best guys!” he continued.” At one point they were worshipped and then the minute they become successful everything flips,” he said. “I don’t really care, I just want to make music. That’s my thing; making music that I love and that pleases me. Whoever may naturally connect with the music is just a bonus."
