AQUASKY 'RAISE THE DEVIL' ALBUM OUT NOW...

Rave legends Aquasky seem to have a strange fascination with numbers, describing the number 7 as their lucky number (hence the 777 record label) and releasing the album Raise The Devil on the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year. Not to mention they have been in the game 16 years reflected by the 16 tracks on what is ironically the 7th album they have released. If your mind isn't officially blown by this matrix meets 'The Mothman Prophecies' esque calendar manipulation then there isn't much else to say.

With the moons aligning in a fashion that point to it being a big year for the inventors of bassline breaks, the album acts as an amalgamation of sorts, featuring an all-star cast of notorious artists old and new from members of Scratch Perverts to Cutline.

The album is DOPE.
I'd go as far as to say it's the best thing iv heard all year.

AQUASKY, ‘RAISE THE DEVIL’ PROMO VIDEO...

Legendary Bournemouth-based trio Aquasky return with their 8th studio album 'Raise The Devil' featuring 16 bass-heavy party tracks which include guest vocals and collaborations from Lee Mortimer, Engine Earz Experiment, Daddy Freddy, Ragga Twins, Tenor Fly, Mr. Thing, PYRAMID, Acafool, Deja, Roisin Brophy, Didjelirium and Bex Riley. This album sees the trio take it back to basics and return to what people expect when they hear the name Aquasky!

Having been solid friends since the heady days of rave and acid house, the guys first hit the studio together during the jungle era and in 1995 Aquasky was born, signing immediately to Moving Shadow before going onto release on some of the biggest and best labels including Polydor, Botchit & Scarper, Reinforced, Good Looking Records, Hospital, Southern Fried and Mr. Bongo. In 2001 they took the decision to launch their own imprint Passenger as a place where they had free reign to unleash their full creativity and develop both their sound and the sounds of other acts.

'Raise The Devil' sees the guys return to what they know best... delivering bonafide dancefloor bangers. There are elements of Breakbeat, Rave, D&B, Dubstep, Nu-Jungle, Warehouse, Drumstep and Reggae. The focus and album title refers to getting people to find their inner devil trapped within themselves and releasing it. Harnessing that sourced energy productively and creatively whether that is in the club, the studio, at home or on the streets, demanding for change! This isn’t a political record, it isn’t even a record with a purpose driven end goal but it is an album that deals with the positive and unleashes heaps of good vibes to the listener.

This is an album for those who loved Aquasky’s previous albums ‘Beat The System’ and ‘Stayfresh’.

Alongside the album release, expect an extensive worldwide tour visiting friends old and new across the world.
Get ready for the onslaught!

AQUASKY, 'BACK TO THE OLD SKOOL' MIXTAPE...

Aquasky, 1998 mixtape
What were you doing back in 1998?...

I was 12, and set up my 1st business- "boy with a bucket and sponge"...
Turned out not to be viable!
"b.w.b.s" was quickly followed by selling fake N.U.S cards and foreign cigarettes, almost resulting in my premature ejection from education...

A few blokes doing some cool stuff in '98 were Aquasky.

This is a mix that Brent (pictured left of the trio) did live on his decks back in 1998 after Aquasky moved back to Bournemouth from London and all shared a house.

We'll let them off providing a tracklist, as it's been 13 years!

AQUASKY INTERVIEW FOR DMC...

Aquasky DMC Interview
The DMC organisation is committed to exposing DJ talent, and to raising DJ standards. It’s not surprising, that today they chose to have a catch up with the mighty Aquasky....
...
..
.

You three got together in 1995 and within three months were letting us pound the nation's dancefloor's with your first release on Moving Shadow. How did the band get together in the first place?

Brent: "To summarise, we were all using Dave’s studio at differing times of the week whilst at college in the early 90’s so we heard each other’s beats. Dave made rave and early amen jungle, Kieron made early jungle and early deep drum and bass and I made errr... trip hop! Instrumental hip hop as it was then known as the trip hop tag hadn’t been created! Kieron did a mixtape in late '94 of jungle which had the first kinda jazzy bits on it and it was the catalyst!!! It was decided we should all meet ASAP and make a tune. 'Images' was that tune in Feb1995."

What drum n' bass clubs were you hitting back then?

Brent:"We were in the Moving Shadow and Reinforced families back then so we played at their parties. Our first overseas gig as Aquasky outside of the labels was in Koln in Germany in 1996. We played Damien Lazurus’s night in Old Street with Dego. Heiner from Basswerk was there and he asked me to play his dubplate and being a nice guy, I did. We have been friends with them ever since and Laszlo from Basswerk designed our first album cover in 1997 for ‘Orange Dust’. The club was the Rose Club and we still have the flyer! I have got to mention club Speed at the Mars Bar in Soho! The first time I heard an Aquasky tune being played out was as I walked into Club Speed for the first time in '95 and Bukem or Fabio was playing it on dubplate - was a nice feeling. And I got thrown out of there on my Birthday for tackling Rob Playford to the floor (I was told!).

Which DJs were you all looking up to at the time?

Brent: "Only two really...Fabio and Bukem. They had a long history with Bournemouth and they were always down once a month."

Dave: "For me it was mainly Fabio and Grooverider, also Bukem, Randal and Top Buzz."

Kieron: "The first time I heard propper drum and bass was on tapes of Kiss FM that my mate Shaun O'Hara (produced as Mad Dog with him - he also was part of the rave band Aurora). DJs like Randal, Rap, Bukem and Fabio."

So a new series for you 'Monster Sounds' in collaboration with Loopmasters, tell us all about it...

Brent: "Well we did the first Artist Series for Loopmasters and thankfully it was a success and I think they are on their 75th release in that series now! Matt from Loopmasters loved our music from back in the day and Bukem dedicated a tune to him back in '96 and it was one of ours! The respect goes both ways as Matt is a great guy and a fantastic businessman so when we were offered the chance to work with him on a sub label we were well up for it."

How do you pick the musicians that feature samples on the packs?

Brent: "Thankfully we have been round long enough to know many people in many genres. It’s rare we ever fall out with anyone so those contacts are still there. We wanted to work with those people we have worked with before who were reliable and could bring something exciting to the series. We are not focusing on one particular style or genre. As Aquasky we have been broad in our musical output and 'Monster Sounds' is no exception to out ethos and beliefs.

What's the best use of your content you've heard in someone's track?

Brent: "Well, we featured the Ragga Twins on our pack back in 2007 and I keep hearing those samples cropping up in so many tunes in so many genres. So yeah, probably that’s a good answer to the question (though, to elaborate, I would be lying if I said they were all good!)

What is the most valuable aspect to producers from these excellent sample packs?

Brent: "Simple ...access to lots of great useable sounds made by credible producers who have a proven track record in there genre, were defo setting the quality control on high for all the packs! Its about being able to find what you are looking for easily and quickly and then being able to slot it into your track with ease. A good bunch of samples / loops complement a production. Sometimes samples and loops that sound very phat with lots going on are hard to utilise. As producers we know what actually works."

What are the big 10 tunes you are playing at the moment?
"Anything off the forthcoming Aquasky album 'Raise The Devil'! on Passenger
Napt 'Bass' on Red Sugar
Aquasky vs Pyramid 'And The Beat Goes' on Passenger
Bill Posters and Deckscar 'Feel Good' on Passenger
Black Noise 'Work That Sucker' on Wearhouse Music
Mindflow 'Need To Be (Afghan Headspin Remix)
Foreign Beggars 'Solace One' ft. Black Sun Empire
601 Brothers and Sisters on Passenger
TC ft. Dread MC 'Concrete'
Enigma 'Flavouse'

DMC are the proud owners of the 'Back To Mine' series - what 10 tunes could we expect 'back at yours' after a club or on a Sunday morning?

"Shades of Rhythm 'Sounds Of Eden'
The Untouchables 'Take A Chance on Strictly Rhythm
The House Crew 'Keep The Fires Burning' on Production House
Mark Murphy ‘Red Clay’
Brand Nubian ‘Claiming I'm A Criminal’
Champions Of Nature ‘Salsa Smurf’
Michael Frank ‘Just Like Key Largo’
D Jazzsteppa 'D U B' ft.Ghetto Priest
Cold Stream & Hearts 'Arapaima' (check out the album 'Modern Dub from Bucharest' on Dubkraft)
Fenech Soler 'Stop and Stare' (Gemini remix)"

What is the best club you have played at this year?

Brent: "I played a great club this year in St George in Transalvania, not sure what the name was, but it was an old Communist disco...amazing crowd and it properly went off. There's footage of it on you tube if ya search Aquasky Kollektive Session you will find it..."

Dave: "The Social Club in Paris was pretty darn sick!"

Kieron: "The Deathwish Disco @ 93 Feet East in London was a great party - even though my sound was only coming out on the right speakers for half the set!"

What producers have inspired you over the years?

Brent: "Gotta be some of the old jungle/d&b/rave guys like Wax Doctor, Jack Smooth, Skanna, Bukem (his pre 96 stuff), 4Hero, Manix, Rufige Kru, LFO, Peshay (his pre 96 stuff), Rob Playford... and in the golden era of breaks it would be The Breakfastaz, Autobots and Distortionz."

Dave: "I guess for me a lot of the old Strictly Rhythm house stuff and also as Brent says, the old drum and bass guys he's listed, but also people like Rick Ruben who's been involved in some classic albums and the production style of stuff like Queen, where they have that totally nuts sound."

Kieron: "I think its artists of tunes I hear that make me think wow I havent heard that before - and then this 'inspires' what we do. Trevor Horn (early 80's - got me interested in electronic music), Rabit City, Prodigy, LTJ Bukem, Alex Reece, Calibre, Hi Contrast, Zinc, Fake Blood, Skream."

What is the best record ever made?

Brent: "‘Red Clay’ by Freddie Hubbard and all the cover versions I have so far located on vinyl!"

Dave: "'Passenger' Iggy Pop."

Kieron: "'Sgt Pepper' - Beatles."

What do each member of Aquasky bring to the mixing desk?

Brent: "We all pay for the electricity that runs it!"

Dave: Tea and Coffeee making facilities and long hours."

Kieron: "Interesting smells that originate from the toilet."

What are the most annoying habits of each of you in the studio?

Brent: "Probably ignoring what the other is trying to say or removing parts from a tune when someone isn’t in the room."

Kieron: "Interesting smells that originate from the toilet."

What one vocalist would you like to get in the studio and work with?

Brent: "We have already done Kool Keith, Ragga Twins and Diane Charlemagne so we can cross those off... I really like MCs like Matt Maddox, Diabolic, Esoteric, Ill Bill, Vinnie Paz, Cannabis, Idee, Q-Unique, Immortal Technique, Slaine & Goretex...or older guys like Ice T, Chuck D, Mellie Mel...actually...the answer to that question is Mellie Mel!!!"

Dave: "David Byrne would be dope!"

Kieron: "Ed Sheeran has a great voice and also writes excellent lyrics."

You have run your Passenger label for 15 years, what have been your most memorable releases?

Brent: "'Teamplayers' it has to be...that was a great era for breaks. The press etc. were trying to play up that there was a rift in the community. Not sure why they kept running pieces like that, but 'Teamplayers' was our answer to those rumours. We wanted to show that we could easily make a tune with someone like Meat Katie and not end up scrapping! To this day I will always cherish that writing process and all the people we worked with. And of course the Bassline Breaks era which was the prelude to the current 140 jungle scene that is doing the rounds now."

Dave: "Probably the one I remember the most is our remix of 'What's down Low' by Baitercell and Schmacher feat. Bex - funny 'cos it's one of the main tunes when playing older style sets, if ya drop that one in Spain things deffo heat up! And as Brent said, our collab with Meat Katie, I dropped it in Sydney last time I was there and the place went absolutely mental!"

Kieron: "'Kontrol' by Aquasky. I remeber this as it was the first breaks tune we released on Passenger and it also signalled a new direction for us (post Zinc 138 trek era). Also 'Gutter Pump' by Noisia was a memorable release not just because it sold so well, but it also showed you could buck the genre trend with a wicked tune."

Who has been the best vocalist you have worked with?

Brent: "Diane Charlemagne...because she brings so many memories with her. She is such a lovely person and her voice is just heaven!"

Dave: "Hard to pinpoint one! There's so many talented vocalists we have worked with and are at the moment - it's hard to pick just one, but it's pretty cool to have worked with Mark Murphy, he's a jazz legend and from a totally different era so really interesting to see how someone like that works."

Kieron: "All the above and also the Ragga Twins deserve a big mention for their continuing releationship with Aquasky."

And finally, what is next from the Monster Sounds series...?

Brent: "Next up we have out man Kelevra followed up with Lee Mortimer... two guys who have been an inspiration to us whilst we made our Black Noise releases. And really nice guys too... both have been to our studio many times and we always have a great laugh."

AQUASKY INTERVIEW…

Aquasky are currently in the studio finishing off 'Raise The Devil', their seventh album, due for release on their own Passenger label in October. Aquasky tell KMAG all about it…

KMAG: Tell us more about Raise The Devil, what can we expect?
AQUASKY: Expect 140bpm minimum!!! We've gone back to our roots on this one. We are dusting off the jungle vibes and tweaking the bass plug-ins. It's going to be a breakbeat mash-up basically. Like a continuation from our 'Beat The System' and 'Stayfresh' albums from 2002 and 2003. Plenty of old school references and some evil undertones.

KMAG: When is it coming out and on what formats will it be available?
AQUASKY: It should be out October but we're still writing it now. If we can get it completed by the end of July we are on schedule. We have the Ragga Twins over today to add another track inna funky style!

The formats will be digital, obviously, and CD. Not sure about vinyl. Might do a series of 12"s. It's hard as it's hardly a money-making option these days... but being old school we feel obliged to go that route. Depends what the budget is saying!!!

KMAG: What's the thought process behind the title Raise The Devil?
AQUASKY: It has two meanings... firstly, it's about our music taking a dark and noisy twist again and it's all about raising the devil in us, dragging up the anarchy from the deep recesses.

The other meaning is connected to the times we are going through now. About how humanity has to dig down deep and stand up against the shadowy powers that are controlling every aspect of our lives. The banks, the secret societies, the boys club of lawyers, politicians and media moguls that tell us what we should think.

Being a keen observer on social and economic events, whether domestic or international, we were aware that this year was going to be a year of unrest. A year of riots and civil unity. We wanted to make an album that reflected that notion and rolled out a soundtrack to it. Like the old school early jungle soundtrack for the last period of social unrest in this country in the early 90s when people were again fighting the Tories, when people unified and tackled the government and their puppet masters with direct action.

I am not a believer of rioting being the solution, though in my youth I was a part of many riots. I believe rioting and violence will just give those more powers to roll out more draconian laws. But not everyone thinks the same as I do... it's only been the last 18 months that I have given this thought any consideration.

We also got fucked about a fair bit when we were doing our Black Noise project and, in turn, that had a negative twist on Aquasky and our productivity. But over the course of time we have channeled those negative vibes into creative musical statements... people wanted us to tear it out and it's official... Aquasky are back to give the others a good run for their money. It's not a commercial album at all... it's about as underground as we like to get and it feels good to be the ones that have to play at the end of the night again because no one has the tunes to play after us!

KMAG: Did you set out with a specific vision of what you wanted to do with the album?
AQUASKY: We wanted a lot of the vocal tracks to have positive meanings and statements. Of course there are some party joints on there, it wouldn't be an Aquasky album without a party joint or two! We also wanted the music to be melodic and deep like the old Moving Shadow days we were involved in. But we wanted it to be a proper tear-out fest like our music in the early noughts. We had to combine these two aspects and put them into a 2011 package and I think we have done it nearly. We have the 140 breaks thing going on, a bit of dubstep, some drumstep and, yes, we have done a d&b tune as well!

KMAG: Who have you collaborated with on it?
AQUASKY: This album we have The Ragga Twins, Daddy Freddy, Tenor Fly, Lee Mortimer, Engine Earz, PYRAMID, Acafool and a heap of new vocalists that we have been lucky enough to hook up with and that should blow some people away!

KMAG: Got any other releases in the pipeline you can tell us about?
AQUASKY: We have another Black Noise EP forthcoming on Lee Mortimer's Wearhouse label. We have some tracks with Kelevra, again as Black Noise, coming out on our Passenger label. We will also have a heap of Aquasky singles after the album which will continue this new musical output... but those will happen after the album writing process has been completed.

KMAG: What else are you working on at the moment?
AQUASKY: We are busy whilst doing the album developing our new sample pack label Monster Sounds which we do in conjunction with the incredible Loopmasters family. As we were the first to do the Artist Series, and thankfully it was a great success, Loopmasters asked if we would like to start up our own sub label with them. It's great... it's like running a record label in many ways. Deadlines, artwork, artist liaisons, etc... all those things we are used to and very professional at.

We are fortunate enough to have been around now for 20 years making dance music and in that time we've made many friends and have many contacts. This is a way of opening up our address book and cherry picking artists that are able to assist us in establishing a royalty free sample pack series that covers as many musical genres as we feel are acceptable. People who work with us on Passenger know they get paid and that we are very good at doing the right thing with our artists and those we deal with. I think this information helps us in chasing acts for Monster Sounds as people will make money and they know they won't have to fret about getting paid.

KMAG: Anything else you want to tell us about?
AQUASKY: The zillion web links I suppose!!!! Brace yourselves as it makes for a long read (and imagine what it's like keeping on top of all of this!!!)

DARK DESTROYERS COME EARLY...

The Squatters & Aquasky
With the 1st of July round the corner, maybe I’m shooting my load too early. 2 Dark Destroyers were released today, and they are fucking incred...

The Squatters - Cardiac
http://tinyurl.com/the-squatter-cardiac
The first release from The Squatters new show stopping hallmark, What's Your Status?
"Cardiac" is a chunk of heavyweight big room fun, which certainly ticks all the boxes when it comes to a strong party sound. Colossal bass, Epic breakdowns & an almost minimal yet jumping hook.

Aquasky - Take Me There (Cutline Remix)
http://tinyurl.com/aquasky-takemethere
I head this on an Aquasky mixtape a few months back. Hit rewind, listened to it again. Hit rewind, listened to it again. Hit rewind, listened to it again. Hit rewind, listened to it again… Note to all dubstep producers; this is how you make dubstep.

Note to all DJ’s; fill the clubs with these sounds and watch the walls melt.

Mad love to The Squatters and Aquasky.
LOVE YA!

AQUASKY SHOWCASE…

Stumbled across this video by Aquasky showcasing their last 10 years of gigging from the end of their drum and bass era, the first ever breaks gigs they did in Spain, throughout the bassline breaks era and into their current bass wobble vibes on the 140 tip.

Plenty of Dirty Smart thrown into the mix including ‘Sleep When You’re Dead’, ‘Fiend On The Club Scene’, ‘Fiend Hood’, & ‘Vinyl Rules’.

AQUASKY INTERVIEWED BY TILLLATE...

Tilllate magazine have interviewed one of my favourite electro groups AQUASKY!

Iv been a big fan of these boys for a long time, and one of the trio was repping Dirty Smart's 'Vinyl Rules' tee in this interview...

Tilllate: What’s your set up for making tunes?
Aquasky: Cubase 4 and Ableton rewired with Cubase. Mostly we’re running all VST software, but we have a bunch of old synths and other analogue hardware we sometimes use if we fancy it or the need arises.

Tilllate: How do you approach a track/remix?
Aquasky: We always have the same approach in that we get a few basic ideas down, and make sure the parts are really firing before we move on to arranging a track. Usually we set up Cubase and Ableton on a loop, wither 2/4 or an 8 bar, line up all the tracks underneath each other and get all the parts running together and make sure we get the groove locked down. Then we arrange it, often we may go back and tweak some of the sounds e.g. the drum sounds once it’s arranged to make sure it all sounds phat as possible. We generally try to mixdown the tune as we’re going rather than making a tune and “mixing” it at the end.

Tilllate: Favorite synth/ plug-ins?
Aquasky: We have found the Sonnox stuff to be really good, especially the limiter and EQ. Also, Cubase standard stuff as it’s pretty good – looks boring but does the job! Synth-wise, at the moment N.I Massive as it’s got the most flexible modulation routing and automation.

Tilllate: What you working on just now?
Aquasky: A remix for Engine-Earz experiment, one for The Squatters, two EP’s for Lee Mortimer’s Wearhouse label, as well as tracks on Passenger Records. So, Watch out for them and also the Black Noise sample pack for our sample label Monster Sounds!

Tilllate: What track changed your life and made you want to produce music?
Aquasky: It’s hard to pick one, but I guess it’s got to be something from the early 90’s, so maybe ‘LFO’ by LFO. I always found the clean sub bass in this fascinating!
